Beth David’s History

Beth David, known as Miami’s Pioneer Synagogue, is Miami’s oldest congregation. It was founded in l912 and has a rich and wonderful history. The current location on Southwest Third Avenue dates back to l949 when the neighborhood was predominantly Jewish. The structure is unlike that of modern buildings. The architecture features a dome with six supporting columns. The bimah is made of Brazilian mahogany. A ballroom with magnificent chandeliers adjoins the Sanctuary. Although the neighborhood is no longer Jewish, hundreds of dedicated members from around Miami attend services, events and the acclaimed Gordon Schools of Beth David.

The Beck Museum of Beth David features many artifacts from all over Europe and other countries. A Persian Torah from the 1600s, a travel-size Torah from Bavaria, a Hungarian prayer schedule with moveable clock faces, and pop-up Rosh Hashanah cards from pre-war England and Germany are just a few of the many historical Jewish objects found in this museum.

If you would like to arrange a group tour of Beth David, please contact our Executive Director, Joel Berger. 305 854 3911 ext.203 or email jberger@bethdavidmiami.org.
